Any trauma can be disorienting, making thinking about what to do next challenging. Yet, doing the right things after a car crash is essential. It could be the difference between getting the compensation you are entitled to and being left to foot the bills yourself.

The first people to ring are the police. Failure to report an accident involving injuries could lead to charges. The sooner you do it, the quicker you and anyone else involved will get the medical attention you need. Time can be of the essence in these situations. The faster an ambulance arrives, the more chance the medical team has of catching an injury before it turns into something more serious.

Second, you should ring a friend or family member. Having someone to support you and take over will ease the pressure. It also avoids people getting worried because you have not arrived at your destination yet.

The third person to contact is your insurer. While this does not need to be immediate, it will make securing medical treatment simpler. Each insurer also limits how long you have to inform them if you want to claim.

Do not speak to the other party’s insurer in a crash

If a concerned voice from an insurance company, you do not use calls to ask how you are, do not believe they are doing so out of concern. They are trying to protect themselves. If you say you are fine and have only suffered a bit of bruising, they will note that down and use it to limit the amount they pay you.

Remember that you will not know the full extent of your injuries until you get a thorough medical examination. If you make your fourth call to an attorney, they can deal with the insurance company and guide you through the claim process.
